A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
