Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
