Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

He said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The wider security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official activities, including vehicle use to communication practices.
