Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
