Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
